Analysing your double page spread

Analysing a double page spread is a little different to analysing a front cover, partly because there is more text! Perhaps the first thing to do is read the article so that you get a sense of what it is about and begin to understand the brand identity a little more. You will need to notice the mode of address - how does it talk to the audience? Is it formal/informal? Light hearted? Cynical? Full of praise for the band? Does it use taboo language? Does it use a specific semantic field? Does it use slang? Is there a drop cap at the start?
Also look at the layout - the use of columns, the ratio of text to pictures, the use of picture frames, text wrap or bleeds. Does the masthead appear anywhere on the page? Do we see the questions that are asked or are they implied? Is there a title and sub title? Is there a byline?
Think also about the pictures - what type of shot is used? Black and white or colour? How important is the location?
So although you may at first feel a little stuck for what to write, you can see that there are plenty of points to consider and most importantly when conducting analysis remember to say WHY something has been used.
